Unclaimed insurance payout finally finds 2 sons

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Two Oxford brothers received a windfall from Mississippi's unclaimed property fund.

State Treasurer Tate Reeves presented checks Tuesday to 25-year-old James Michael Duncan and 20-year-old Kevin Shane Taylor - $36,880 each.

Vaught Society reaches $9 million mark

The Vaught Society continues its rapid growth since it was launched at the 2010 Cotton Bowl. On Wednesday, UMAA Foundation Executive Director Danny White announced that the major gift fundraising entity has surpassed the $9 million mark.

The Vaught Society is well on its way to its initial goal of $12.5 million for Ole Miss Athletics.

Ole Miss buys former Whirlpool site

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - The University of Mississippi is buying a former plant site from Whirlpool Corp. for $3.4 million.

Vice chancellor Larry Sparks tells the Oxford Eagle that officials don't have a specific plan for the 68.7 acres bought for future expansion.

Local officials had hoped a manufacturer would buy it, providing new jobs and taxes. Max Hipp, director of the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce, says several companies looked at it over 18 months.

Oxford officials mull leash law

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Oxford officials may rewrite a local ordinance to require animals to be on a leash in public spaces and exclude private property and areas specifically set up for dogs to run free in, such as a dog park.

An amended ordinance before aldermen this week originally proposed requiring animals to be leashed no matter where they were outdoors - including their own front yard.

Mayor Pat Patterson suggested it not go that far.

Changes were proposed after a woman was knocked down recently by a dog running loose at a park and after numerous complaints to police.

New Oxford High School site found

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Oxford School Board has approved spending $2.56 million for 65 acres for a new high school.

The site is east of Mississippi Highway 7 as part of The Commons, a planned urban development begun several years ago.

The state Department of Education must approve the location.

Ole Miss pharmacy school gets millions for construction

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - The University of Mississippi has received $31.7 million to expand the Thad Cochran Research Center, the primary research facility of the School of Pharmacy's National Center for Natural Products Research.

Larry Walker, NCNPR's director since 2001, says the Health Administration is providing $17.8 million, and the National Institutes of Health is providing $13.9 million.

Oxford man changes plea to hunting charges

GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - An Oxford man has been fined $5,010 and ordered not hunt "animals of any kind" during his 12-month probation for federal hunting violations.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that Danny Joseph Hipp pleaded guilty Tuesday to one federal count of illegally taking, killing or possessing migratory birds on Jan. 13.

U.S. Magistrate David Sanders dismissed eight other counts against Hipp.

Hipp and the six others pleaded innocent to the charges on Oct. 12.

The trial for the six other defendants is scheduled for Jan. 24 in federal court in Greenville.
