Tiger Sculpture Coming to the U of M | Arts & Culture

Construction is underway at the University of Memphis. As part of the centennial celebration this spring, alumni donations have funded a bronze tiger statue to be placed on campus. 

A large hole, surrounded by wooden platforms, equipment and orange tape, disturbs regular foot-traffic outside the UC.

According to the University, "the bronze tiger is intended as a means of commemorating the University's past, heightening campus spirit and creating new traditions."

They predict traditions such as, "students rubbing the tiger's paw on the way to an exam, or graduating seniors, dressed in commencement regalia, having their pictures taken near the sculpture."

Some students are worried the cost for the sculpture has been the cause of tuition increases each semester; however, the university has been receiving alumni donations to fund the statue.

They hope to have the sculpture completed by the end of April 2012.

The University will also be acquiring the Ramesses the Great statue this week. It will be located on the north end of campus by Central Avenue.
