New Starbucks open in J.D. Williams Library

Just in time to welcome fall with pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin scones, a new full-service Starbucks Coffee opened recently in the University of Mississippi’s J.D. Williams Library.

After a semester-long market research project, Ole Miss Dining decided to expand the former Java City location and convert it to a Starbucks.

“Since our market research was the driving force behind our decision to convert the Java City into a Starbucks, I am confident that this will be a positive addition that will better accommodate our growing and changing student population,” said Josh Halliday, marketing programs manager for Ole Miss Dining. The convenient location and extra space have students buzzing.

“I really enjoy having Starbucks on campus and having it conveniently located in the library,” said Brittany Grissett, a senior communicative disorders major from Biloxi. “I think it adds a lot to our university and definitely to my study time.”... Read More

Governor makes important visit to Oxford

Governor makes important visit to Oxford

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour paid a visit to Oxford this week to help celebrate the expansion of a local company.  Barbour joined officials from Olin Corporation's Winchester Division for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.  The event took place at Winchester's new Centerfire Ammunition manufacturing facility.  The expansion of the operation is expected to create approximately 1,000 new jobs in Oxford by 2016.

“It is great to be in Oxford celebrating the opening of the Winchester Centerfire operations less than a year after Olin officials announced they were bringing 1,000 jobs to Mississippi,” Gov. Barbour said. “I appreciate the commitment by Olin and the support provided by the Mississippi Development Authority, Lafayette County and the city of Oxford to bring Winchester Centerfire here.”

Winchester broke ground on the 500,000 square-foot Centerfire site in January 2011 as the company began the process of locating its Centerfire operations in Oxford.

Change coming in Kroger's coupon policy

Change coming in Kroger's coupon policy

Kroger's new coupon policy -- to be posted in all stores by Oct. 15 -- earned both a "Yea!" and a "Huh?" from one local coupon enthusiast.

Shana Moland, author of the website and blog My Memphis Mommy, said she's confused about Kroger's policy change on the use of print-at-home Internet coupons.

She said she noticed one of Kroger's stores had already posted the change, which states that Kroger will honor only two Internet coupons per manufacturer per day. The measure is designed to curb coupon counterfeiting.

The Internet coupon portion of the policy, as released to Action News 5, reads as follows:

An ammunition plant’s expansion could create around 1,000 jobs in Oxford.

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour will take part in Winchester Ammunition’s ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. The company describes its planned Centerfire Ammunition Plant as a “state-of-the-art, 500,000 square-foot facility.”

Do you own a Facebook Page?

Do you own a Facebook Page?

If so, you have probably heard that SSL certificates will be required for Facebook pages starting tomorrow, October 1.

In the wake of continued concerns about security, Facebook will now require that all Facebook app developers own an SSL (https instead of http) for their pages. SSL (secure sockets layer) encrypts communications processed over the Internet. This protects against eavesdropping and malicious tampering adding security to Facebook users who previously were asked to switch from https to http when an app did not have SSL.

But that mandate raises lots of questions:

Does every Facebook page have to have an SSL certificate?
