Oxford MS charity, More Than a Meal has announced a fundraising event with a focus on food; it’s called the Great Southern Classics Summer Series at Ravine.
The cuisines of three legendary southern eateries will be recreated on three separate evenings this summer to raise funds for More than a Meal. The first restaurant to be saluted in Uglesich's of New Orleans. The Uglesiches retired before Katrina, yet the food made famous at their historic restaurant, at 1238 Barrone, continues to garner press and awards, such as the RoadFood 2010 Blue Plate Award. Anthony & Gail Uglesich appear frequently on TV, and make special appearances to cook for events in New York, Washington DC, and New Orleans. They also have two cook books, and maintain a website (www.ugelsichs.com). The Uglesiches will be in Oxford, MS for the first of the three events planned by More Than a Meal; they will be working with Chef Joel Miller of Ravine in Oxford to recreate some of the dishes that made their restaurant internationally famous. Miller, the Chef and owner of Ravine, was a frequent Uglesich’s patron when he lived in New Orleans where he worked for both the Brennan family and The Ritz Carlton (as pastry Chef for the hotels five-star restaurant, Victor’s, which closed following Katrina). In addition to his salute to Uglesich’s, Miller is scheduled to recreate renowned dishes created by two other celebrated Southern restaurants (the identities of the other restaurants involved will remain a secret until tickets go on sale.) Noted for his own innovative menus, Miller is delighted by the opportunity afforded by the fundraisers to pay homage to Uglesich’s and the other restaurants selected for the Great Southern Classics Series. Following Katrina, the Uglesiches took refuge in the Midsouth, and although they have maintained close ties here since, this will be their first public event in the region.
Tickets to the June 2nd event benefitting More Than a Meal are $75 per person; there are two seatings at 6:00 pm and 7:45 pm (the number of tickets is limited). Tickets may be purchased at Nella, 103 Court House Square in Oxford MS, or at Ravine, 53 CR 321, Oxford MS {ph 662-234-4555}.
