MDEQ investigates possible asbestos dumping

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality is investigating what authorities believe is an illegal dump in Lafayette County after asbestos was found there.

The asbestos was found in the rubble of several condemned duplexes that were dumped and buried on property.

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store is installing the chargers at select restaurant locations across Tennessee and is becoming a participant in the EV Project, an initiative to increase adoption of electric vehicles by creating a charging infrastructure.

The EV Project is managed by ECOtality, which is providing the electric chargers to the Cracker Barrel locations.

"Becoming a leader in The EV Project continues our tradition of striving to anticipate and meet our guests´ expectations and, at the same time, allows us to participate in a meaningful way in the nation´s explorations of energy independence," CEO Michael A. Woodhouse said.

A total of 24 chargers will be installed along "The Tennessee Triangle," a 425 mile stretch of highway that connects Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga.

Oxford, AIA hosting sustainable design conference

The City of Oxford has been selected by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Center for Communities by Design (SDAT) to participate in a Sustainability Design Team Program.

The Oxford Conference on Sustainable Design will Nov. 1 through Nov. 3.

Seattle first to create Opt-Out Registry for phone books

Seattle became the first city in the nation to create a registry that allows its residents and business to stop delivery of unwanted yellow pages phone books.

The new law passed by in an 8-1 vote by Seattle City Council on Monday creates an Opt-Out Registry that residents and businesses can access on the web, by phone or by mail and requires yellow pages publishers to pay the costs of operating the registry.

The legislation also sets out penalties for yellow pages publishers who continue to deliver books when requested not to. And it requires yellow pages publishers to begin paying for recycling of unwanted and outdated yellow pages directories beginning next year.

MDEQ Announces recycling grants for local governments

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has announced the availability of grants for cities and counties for recycling and materials conservation projects.  Eligible projects include funding for recycling equipment and supplies, educational programs, and promoting the purchase of products with recycled content.  Eligible local governments may submit grant proposals for a potential funding award of up to $100,000.

The deadline to submit an application is 3:00 pm, Friday, August 13, 2010.  For more information, click here.

Composting workshop planned

Looking to learn about composting? Attend an upcoming workshop put on by Nan Johnson.  She will present tips and tricks for composting your yard.  It's information every green thumb should know. 

Composting involves mixing yard and household organic waste in a bin and providing conditions that boost decomposition.  The finishing process is expected to produce a rich organic fertilizer. 

This workshop is for beginners to more experienced composters.  Johnson will be at the Stone Center, 423 Washington Ave., adjacent to Stone Park and across from city pool, Tuesday 29th at 5:30p.m.
