On Tuesday, May 14, Echols will be in Oxford promoting and signing his newly released memoir in paperback, “Life After Death.”  The book chronicles his childhood and illustrates from his experience what it is like to live on death row. The book signing event takes place at Off Square Books.  

Since his release from prison in 2011, Echols has visited Memphis and Nashville to promote “West of Memphis,” a documentary he produced about the “West Memphis Three” case. Click here to read more.

Permission granted to “KICK BUTTS”!

The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD), in collaboration with other local organizations, will encourage youth to take a stand against big tobacco companies and educate their peers about the importance of not smoking on Kick Butts Day, Wednesday, March 20.

Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism which empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against big tobacco companies. Health officials want to raise awareness of the tobacco problem, encourage youth to stay tobacco-free and urge strong action to protect kids from tobacco.

Representatives from the health department will be at the following locations on Wednesday, March 20, to distribute information and tips on smoking cessation:

10 a.m. to noon

• University of Memphis-University Center
499 University
1 p.m.

Father of Mid-South judge missing, could be in Oxford

Father of Mid-South judge missing, could be in Oxford

The father of a Mid-South judge has disappeared.

Police have issued a city watch for Judge Betty Moore's father. His name is Willie Burnett, and he is 78 years old.

His family said he suffers from Dementia and went missing Friday morning.

They said he was last seen leaving the 260 block of Simpson Avenue around 6 a.m. Friday morning in a 2004 GMC black Sierra with a silver tool box. The Tennessee licenses plate is 929FLW

His family believes he might be on his way to Oxford, Miss., which is where he is from.

"But we've looked everywhere. We're looking everywhere and anywhere. Just in case he is somewhere and we need to get to him as quick as we can," said Moore.

Burnett was last seen wearing a maroon sweatshirt with white letters, yellow corduroy jacket and tan pants.
