High school teachers learn to use high-tech gear

A select group of Mississippi high school teachers are learning how to use the same e-lab and laser interferometers used by University of Mississippi researchers in their on-going studies of gravitational waves and black holes.

Five physics instructors participated in the two-day professional development workshop hosted by UM’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. The event, which began Monday (June 11) and ends Tuesday (June 12), aimed to educate the teachers on the physics of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory. It included hands-on demonstrations involving real laser interferometers and online activities.

Summer Institute provides support for prospective minority law students

In the midst of observing the 50th anniversary of the university's integration, the University of Mississippi School of Law has been selected to host a summer program for minorities and disadvantaged students who want a legal education.

The Council on Legal Education Opportunity Summer Institute is set for June 3-July 13. CLEO is a project of the American Bar Association Fund for Justice and Education, and this is the 45th consecutive year for the program.

The School of Law hosted the institute five times from 1977 to 1993, and was chosen by CLEO to host this year along with William Mitchell College of Law.

Souza has eyes set on 2012 Olympics

Rising junior soccer player Rafaelle Souza has been featured on an ESPNU Campus Connection feature about being an Olympic hopeful for Brazil in this summer’s Olympic Games in London, England.

Souza, a native of Salvador, Brazil, is in the player pool to be considered for the Brazilian National Team’s appearance in the 2012 Olympic Games.

(WMC-TV) - You might wonder how at-risk youngsters in Memphis in the Mid-South might benefit via a connection to rap music royalty. Keep reading because Shawn Carter, better known as Jay-Z, wants to offer a bit of his wealth to young people who generally have zero chance when it comes to college scholarships.

Students Create Art that Reflects their Hometowns

With cameras in hand, 22 Mississippi high school students and eight teachers are discovering that art exists everywhere, even in the smallest communities.

The Wide Angle Learning project, which allows high school students to plan and create original art projects, is in its second year. The project is coordinated through the Mississippi Teacher Corps, or MTC, at the University of Mississippi and sponsored by the Southern Education Foundation.

Eight student groups from six schools took on this year's challenge of creating photo books that examine some aspect of their communities and the people within them.

"The program lets students use many skill sets," said Ben Guest, MTC program manager. "Photography is an art form. The layout is a design skill. How you edit and arrange the photos is a technical skill and interviewing people is a multifaceted skill. Bringing these skills into one long-term project is what education should really be."

Ten local high schools will be participating in a fundraising event for the Mid-South Food Bank. The University of Memphis College of Engineering Administration Building will hold the event in their second story lobby. It is sponsored by the West Tennessee Branch American Society of Civil Engineers Younger Members Group.

Each high school will have three hours to construct a sculpture made entirely out of full cans. Every school will have a professional civil engineer as well as a civil engineering student to offer advice and answer questions throughout the "Canstruction."

Bartlett, Collierville, East, Harding Academy, Kingsbury, Ridgeway, St. Bennedict at Auburndale, St. Agnes Academy, St. MAry's and Whitestation are among the participating high schools.

This year's event will mark the sixth year of the competition.
